Morphos´ sanctuary

In Costa Rica it is possible to admire the beauty of the Blue Morpho Butterfly (Morpho helenor marinita) outdoors.

If you´re lucky you may watch one, maybe two, but it´s not easy to have the opportunity to observe hundreds of them together.

This natural spectacle is a reality in the Little town of Los Criques of San Ramón de Alajuela, a couple of hours away from the capital, where was recently opened to the public the “Butterflies House” ,an impressive butterfly garden of 800 square meters.

Here, the visitor has the opportunity to be in contact with the exotic plants and flowers typical of the tropical rain forest, combined with an unique collection of 2.500 Blue Morpho butterflies and 2,000 more of other species.

But the Morpho is the “spoiled” in the place.  Of the total of the garden , 300 square meters are exclusively for these blue beauties. To guarantee the ideal environment for the full development of this insect, since they are eggs until they fly away from the cocoon, a representative patch of the rain forest was planted.

On a sunny day, all the environment turns blue, there´s not a single spot where you don´t see a butterfly. Just beside, in other greenhouse of 500 square meters, hundreds of multicolored wings fly in one of the biggest butterfly gardens of the country.

“Butterflies House”  offers a guided tour of one hour, with a maximum of 15 persons per group, that includes a snack and a splendid view of  part of the San Carlos plains, They open everyday from  7 am to 4 pm.

Birds´ lovers have the opportunity to watch some as the Keel billed Toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus), that come searching for food in the trees around the greenhouses and the visitors center.

Among the plans of  “Butterflies House” is to develop projects of social responsibility with the neighbors of nearby communities, especially with children and women heads of homes.  “We also want to increase the number of species in exhibition, and later, open a café which main attraction will be the butterflies, “ explained the owner, Cristian Araya.
